Being a vegan or vegetarian in a new town can be tricky. Not knowing any of the good spots which will cater for you can mean the fun process of eating out turns into a bit of a struggle. Since moving to Huddersfield last September, I’ve scouted out some great places to eat that provide yummy vegan and veggie friendly food.

If you’re in need of some restaurants and cafes within walking distance from the uni, here’s my top five recommendations:

Bar Maroc –

Good for: pizza and cocktails

An intimate Moroccan style restaurant located in the town centre, Bar Maroc is the perfect spot for enjoying an evening of eating and drinking with your friends. Hosting a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian pizza toppings as well as plenty of beverages, everyone is catered for. I love trying different combinations of toppings each time I go, a current favourite of mine are the sun-dried tomatoes and hummus!

Humpit Hummus and Pita Bar –

Good for: lunch and nibbles

Located opposite the university, Humpit is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat on your lunch break. From falafel to sweet potato to the classic hummus and pita, there’s bound to be a tasty meal that everyone will enjoy. I’m a huge fan of iced drinks so their ‘Iced Humptea’ is a sweet and refreshing addition to any meal.

Zetland Street Canteen –

Good for: something a bit different

If you’re someone who tires of eating the same food, the Zetland Street Canteen is ideal. They rotate independent street food vendors every eight weeks, so there will always be something new for you to try! Plus, it’s located right across from the uni! An honorary mention goes to the Hero Hummus Bar, with their variety of vegan and veggie options – and they’re all super delicious.

The Peppercorn –

Good for: afternoon tea and cake

A small vegan cafe just five minutes walk from the town centre, The Peppercorn provides a cosy atmosphere and yummy treats. With an ever-changing selection of mouth-watering goodies, including gluten-free options, you’ll be sure to find something to satisfy that sweet tooth. If, like me, you’re not too keen on sweet food, there’s lots of savoury options available too.

The Lord Wilson –

Good for: breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Let’s be honest, you can’t beat a classic spoons. With plenty of vegan and vegetarian options on offer, Huddersfield’s Lord Wilson is perfect for just about any occasion. Popular with students, you can guarantee great food and an even better vibe! I’m a big fan of their vegetarian breakfast when I’m in need of a fry-up (usually after a night at Camel Club).

Of course there are loads of other options in and around Huddersfield to try, and we encourage you to go out and explore everything this wonderful little town has to offer!
