SCONUL Access Scheme

One of the perks of being a University of Huddersfield student is that you are eligible to join the free SCONUL Access Scheme. This scheme provides you access to enter and use various university libraries across the UK.

So, what is the SCONUL Access Scheme?

Well – it is a reciprocal scheme that allows many university library users to borrow and use library books and journals at other participating libraries. You can find out more about the scheme at

Okay, so what is there for me?

This would be beneficial for commuter students who do not live in Huddersfield but need access to academic books and materials to study. It can also be useful for other students who are travelling to/from a friend’s university or their home towns and still need to have the space and opportunity to work on their assignments during the weekends or vacation periods.

For instance, your family lives in Manchester and you need to go home for the Christmas/winter vacation. But you still have assignments to do and exams to study for. You might not have enough materials with you and need to access the university library. The SCONUL Access Scheme will then allow you to be a free member of the University of Manchester’s library, and you can then use the books at their library for your assignments.

(Note: for full-time undergraduate students at the University of Huddersfield, you can have access to 171 institutions across the UK/Ireland, including the University of Manchester, University of Leeds, University of Bradford and University of York, among others).

Awesome! How and where do I sign up?

You will need to go to the SCONUL Access Scheme website and fill out the short form to confirm your eligibility. If you then click on an institution that you would like to get access to, the website will direct you to a short application form.

Fill up the application form with your student information, and it will be sent to the University of Huddersfield Library. They will then confirm your eligibility (and check that your library record is clean), before granting you access you the scheme.

Once you are approved into the scheme, feel free to visit any of the participating libraries on the list accessible by you. As long as you have your approval email and your Huddersfield Student ID, you should be able to get access to the other university libraries.

Quick note: Each university library has different registration process for SCONUL/external users. For instance, some university libraries may require you to fill an application form online prior to your first visit. Other university libraries may allow you to visit and fill out an application form on the spot. It’s best to check their websites for more information on registering as a SCONUL guest user.
