Should we save our high streets?

Marks and Spencer’s closure on the 4th May continued the exodus of Huddersfield’s high street, while many other business’ precariously cling on during these challenging times. BHS was the first major casualty closing its doors back in August 2016, taking with it 60 jobs. Since then it has remained unoccupied, a ghostly relic to times gone by where giant department store’s reigned supreme and the high streets thrived. Other notable losses include; Adams, Ethel Austin, Greenwoods, Jessops, La Senza, Poundworld and Woolworths. Whereas in the past when one business would close another would step in to replace it, this is no longer the case as numerous premises remain barren. Nor…

We live in a consumerist society, and that is no news to anybody. But do we really need what we think we do? Will the fifth pair of sneakers make you happier? Will the newest smartphone bring you the joy you are seeking for? It might do. But only for a short period of time. And then what? You will want more. It’s like an addiction you don’t realise you have because it is portrayed as the ordinary. Look around you – what exactly, out of all the things you own is useful? And how much of it is there without any purpose whatsoever? I recently watched a movie Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important…

Best of Both Worlds – and Education Systems.

I consider myself lucky – I get to spend 4 years pursuing my undergraduate studies in the United States of America, and now I’m here in the United Kingdom, pursuing my 1-year postgraduate studies. Coming from a small Southeast Asian country named Malaysia, being able to pursue my studies in two different countries has been an opportunity of a lifetime. It has helped shape my perspectives and showed me a whole new side of the world. Today, I want to share just some of my experiences in these two different education systems. 1) Slight differences in the naming conventions. I find it both interesting and confusing at how we name…

Veganuary Vs. Februdairy: The Twitter War That Backfired on the Pro-Dairy Community

This year’s Veganuary caused more of a buzz than any years prior, with a record 250,000 people pledging to take part. But, with this came a rush of people eager to slate the movement and encourage the following month to be coined Februdairy. Recent research by The Vegan Society has revealed the number of vegans in the UK in 2018 was quadruple the amount in 2014, jumping from just 150,000 to 600,000 (that’s 1.16% of the population!). It’s very clear that veganism is rapidly on the rise – and Veganuary is a huge contributor to this. The movement urges people to follow a cruelty-free vegan lifestyle for the month of…
