Becoming an ‘internet sensation’ seems to be something anybody can do these days, as demonstrated by all the memes and GIFs we see flying around the internet, but what does it take to become an actual, real life sensation?
Well Toby Burton, a student here at the University of Huddersfield, may be about to find out. What started as him spending “all [his] spare time working on music” from a young age, has now turned into his songs being made available for purchase on iTunes and for streaming on Spotify.
Growing up in Sheffield, Burton released his debut EP in November 2014, reaching #80 on the iTunes singer-songwriter charts. Burton also submitted two of his songs, ‘Shining’ and ‘Slow It Down,’ to BBC Introducing and was lucky enough to have it played on air. Of this, Burton says: “It’s usually meant to take 6 months for them to hear it, but they listened to it overnight!” More recently, he has had his new single ‘Stuck’ played across the airwaves.
Like many other music artists, Burton began his journey on YouTube, uploading covers that were received very well by his impressive 363 subscribers. After receiving much love for his online presence, he moved on to performing at small gigs within his local community. This Burton used as a stepping stone that enabled him to reach out into the wider community and he began performing within larger venues such as The Plug and the O2 Academy in Sheffield. Burton went on to perform at even larger festivals such as Underneath the Stars.
Burton has also been lucky enough to have supported reasonably large touring stars such as Kate Rusby, a recognised English Folk singer, on tour. His style is unusual for his young age, often getting compared to the likes of music sensation Passenger or even a ‘moody’ version of Bon Iver. Opting for ‘well-crafted lyrics and simplistic yet haunting guitar playing mixed with beautiful piano melodies,’ Burton’s music has gone down a storm.
Burton’s music radiates perfect chill vibes so if you need to relax, go and check out his new single ‘Stuck,’ which is available alongside his other releases on iTunes here. All of his music is also available to stream on Spotify. For more info on Burton and his music, take a look at his Facebook page here.
