International Food & Culture Festival 2017

The University of Huddersfield’s International Food & Culture Festival was held on 1st November and will go down as one of the highlights of the semester. Societies representing 120 nations from all corners of the globe showcased what their countries had to offer in terms of cuisine and entertainment. The event was a sell-out and had over 700 people attending. When the crowd entered the expanded lecture halls of the Oastler building, they were greeted by a warm, buzzing atmosphere. The sides of the room were draped in flags from all over the world which, coupled with the variety of clothing on display, made for a kaleidoscopic scene. Whether it…

SU Elections: Exclusive Statement From DIVERSITY

Image courtesy of Huddersfield SU From the moment it was announced, this year’s election sweep was surrounded by more controversy than any SU elections in my experience, and I have experienced my fair share of these elections now. Yet the main complaint against DIVERSITY is a complaint that we hear virtually every year. Those of you who were around last year (and the year before that!) may remember similar accusations being made toward the group UNITY. We reached out to DIVERSITY and asked for a statement from the slate, DIVERSITY as a team issued the following response:   “There were some issues during the elections in which were dealt with…

    Change For The Better ?

A number of you may be aware that the Students’ Union will relocate to the brand new Learning & Leisure Centre in January 2014.  This project has been in the pipelines since March 2011, but we have now reached the stage where plans for the move have become finalised. Over the past few days the plans have attracted significant attention from students – particularly on social media.  Whilst we had planned to run a huge communications campaign on this issue immediately after Freshers’ Week (to make sure messages weren’t drowned out), it’s become very obvious that we need to start this process now. So, we’ve produced an in-depth guide to…

Introducing pole dancing to students at Huddersfield

The Huddersfield University Pole Dancing Academy (HUPDA) is one of the Students’ Union’s biggest and most active societies. For any society, this would be a notable achievement. The fact that HUPDA launched less than a year ago makes it difficult to overstate how successful they’ve has been. Founded by student Eilis Tobin in partnership with a local pole dancing studio, HUPDA has given students a chance to take part in what is an increasingly popular fitness activity. The aim of the society was to introduce pole dancing for fun and fitness to students at the University. With classes tailored to both complete beginners and advanced dancers, and a successful showcase…
