Thaiboxers kick it up a notch

For the first time in the societies history, the new Thai boxing committee have organised for the best Thai boxers in the country to come in and deliver special seminars for the members. Last term proved to be a strong start with the multiple time world champion Liam ‘The Hitman’ Harrison taking time off his busy training schedule to come to Huddersfield and deliver a master class to the Thai boxing society. Liam is currently a fighter in one of the most competitive weight categories in the world and is the biggest name in English Thai boxing and has been for a while.
The session began with warming up as a class, performing exercises and partnering up. Liam then showed everyone what he believed were particularly effective techniques, giving personal tuition and covering a large amount of defensive sweeps that can be used in a variety of situations to off balance and throw your opponent.
The master class was extremely beneficial for members of all abilities; the least experienced of the group were able to learn some of these new techniques step-by-step while the more experienced were encouraged to develop them further and be a bit more creative. The session continued with some light sparring where Liam and his assaistant Kate both commented on seeing some very talented members in the group. Finally, Liam put the group through their paces with a small but gruesome taste of his personal fitness regime. The feedback from the society has been extremely positive and the committee have already decided that they will be asking Liam to return for another seminar later in the academic year.
Mike Hargreaves, President of Muay Thai Lions, said: “Our new committee is determined to operate at the same level of enthusiasm and diligence as the previous one, so we set goals early on to increase membership numbers, offer more in terms of training and get the society more involved in Wednesday socials. We also wanted to offer something brand new to our members, and getting well known professionals involved is not only a great a great achievement for our society but also extremely useful and inspiring. This term we’re looking at getting world champions Andy Howson and Kevin Harper to be our guest coaches.”
So far, the society is on route to achieving all of the above, having attracted sixty-four members, offering two training sessions a week and gaining sponsorships from local bars including Five, Revs and Tokyo’s.

It’s never too late to join the Thai boxing society and new members are always welcome. January is a great time to start a new hobby and with Liam set to return with more world champions to give seminars, there has never been a better time to get involved.
