Such a Slut!

Mean Girls is arguably one of the most quotable films of the noughties, there isn’t many people “in the English speaking world” who won’t recognise phrases such as, “she doesn’t even go here”,stop trying to make fetch happen” and “four for you Glen Coco, you go Glen Coco!

However, I feel as if the comic genius of Tiny Fey has over-ridden one of the most important quotes of the film, said by her own character and highlighting a huge issue in today’s society, “girls you have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores, it just makes it okay for guys to call you sluts and whores.”

Why on earth, in the 21st century, is it still an automatic and instinctual thing to judge people for doing one of the most natural acts to exist? I will hold my hand up and say that I have been a perpetrator of slut-shaming, as I’m sure the majority of society has. Who can blame us when the mainstream media are also guilty of it, publishing articles about that actress leaving that rock star’s home at 3am? Whether it’s calling someone a name, spreading rumours of their endevours or silently judging them, slut shaming is not okay.

One of the biggest issues regarding slut-shaming is that men have been users of derogatory words regarding the sex lives of women, and men are usually congratulated for living a lavish sex life whereas women are judged and gossiped about, for exactly the same act. This is problematic in itself, as sex often involves both genders, it seems somewhat bizarre that the reactions are polar opposite, this double standard seems a tad unfair on women – but sexism still isn’t relevant is it?

Back to the Mean Girls quote, men are not at fault for judging women for sleeping with who they like, when women are doing it as well. It is society as a whole that is judging women for having sex and it really needs to stop. Before you utter the words “whore” or “slut”, or before those words even cross your mind, you need to ask yourself why you are giving that person and their sex life any thought whatsoever, let alone judging them for it. The majority of the population does enjoy sex, and it’s absolutely ridiculous that half of them will be punished for it.

Let’s take a minute to look at bunnies. Everyone knows that bunnies have a lot of sex, the phrase “at it like rabbits” has some context. Do we, as society, like bunnies any less in the knowledge of this? No. Bunnies aren’t judged because of how much sex they have, bunnies are still seen as a cute and lovable animals.
