The Sanskrit word ‘yoga’ is translated as a union between body, mind and spirit. I have never tried any form of yoga before, but had heard it was extremely rejuvenating, beneficial and cleansing for the soul, so when my friend suggested coming along to a beginner’s class that she was teaching it tempted me to give it a try.
So there I was on a Wednesday evening, rolled up yoga mat in tow, open minded and ready to embarrass myself with my lack of flexibility. When I arrived I was greeted with tranquil music, a sea of purple yoga mats on the floor as well as plenty of friendly faces. We began with some easy yoga positions, such as the flowing tree and continued onto the bridge and finally energy block release which were all extremely cleansing.
Dru yoga which is the style of yoga that Radha teaches is an elegant and deeply relaxing technique which concentrates on improving strength and flexibility, creating core stability and building a heightened feeling of positivity. The yoga we practiced was peaceful and helped me to focus on myself and let all the worries of lectures and assignment deadlines float away from me; this was enhanced by the added sound of the breeze of the trees outside. We finished with a relaxation period, complete with cosy blankets and pillows, which almost sent me into a deep, hypnotic sleep. After the class I felt rejuvenated, fresh and regained a positive outlook on the rest of my week.
Yoga enables you to gain an overall positive approach to life and can also alleviate back pain and increase spine flexibility, improve breathing, increase confidence levels and enhance an individual’s mood. The amazing thing about yoga is that it can be practiced by people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels.
The weekly classes have many themes and are focused around stress relief and relaxing, due to the chaotic environment that many of us find ourselves in. Classes are on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pmand are at a cheap £3.50 per week for an hour of yoga, or there are blocks of classes available to purchase. Yoga is an excellent way to kick back and relax whilst keeping your mind focused and ready for upcoming challenges. I can safely say that yoga has been added to my list of hobbies and has already helped me to achieve more in my day to day life.
